The presence of a baseball diamond, though now lost to time, adds an important dimension to our understanding of the Wopsononock Resort. Baseball was already well established as America’s pastime by the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and even informal games were a popular diversion at vacation destinations. The few surviving newspaper clippings that mention games played on the mountaintop suggest that visitors didn’t come merely for the scenery and fresh air — they came to participate in shared recreation.
