Origins of “Wopsononock” as a place name are mixed and not definitive, but it is a unique name not appearing elseware.
Dr. George P. Dooehoo wrote and published a book in 1928 entitled Indian Villages & Place Names of Pennsylvania. His explanation was that it is an Indian word meaning “white-something-land.”

But in the obituary (Altoona Tribune, August 25, 1903) of Alexander Lowry Holliday, grandson of Adam Holliday, namesake of Hollidaysburg, PA, he is said to have given the Wopsononock area its name. A. L. Holliday once owned what was called the “Wopsononock Tract,” over 400 acres of mountain land.
